Galerie Marzee

Founded in 1978 in Nijmegen in the Netherlands, Galerie Marzee is one of the principal promoters of international contemporary jewellery and silverware. Since 1995 the gallery has been housed in a former granary on Nijmegen’s waterfront, overlooking the River Waal. With 850 square metres of exhibition space, Galerie Marzee is one of the largest galleries in the Netherlands and the largest gallery for modern art jewellery in the world.

Alongside the permanent Marzee Collection, Galerie Marzee typically mounts five special, temporary exhibitions each year (see our Exhibitions page for a list of current and forthcoming exhibitions). The gallery is unique in its support for emerging young jewellery artists and our annual, international Marzee Graduate Show (which runs from August to October) is one of the most significant events in our calendar.

Marzee Collection
In June 2004, in celebration of our 25th anniversary, Galerie Marzee opened the Marzee Collection to the public. This permanent collection, displayed on the fourth floor of the gallery, comprises over 1000 pieces of jewellery acquired since 1979. The collection includes work by some of the most influential jewellery artists of the late twentieth century as well as pieces by young, new makers.

This seminal collection of international contemporary jewellery also features a series of combs created by renowned jewellers for a Marzee exhibition in 1989. Following the success of this pioneering project the exhibition later travelled to Japan, Germany, Italy and Switzerland, bringing the gallery international recognition.

Marzee Prize
The first Marzee Prize was given to German jeweller Dorothea Prühl in 1999 and since then the prize has been awarded annually to one of the gallery’s artists in recognition of their outstanding work. The prize comprises a solo exhibition at Galerie Marzee and the publication of a book about the winner and their work.

Marzee Graduate Prize
The annual Marzee Graduate Prize is awarded to the most promising of the students who are selected for participation in the Marzee Graduate Show. The prizewinners are offered a week-long workshop at Atelier Ravary in Belgium and the opportunity to exhibit the work produced during the following year’s graduate show.
