Artifacts found in the rich soil of our collective imagination tell a tale of time beyond perception. A deep time, that renders all human endeavors as a flash in a cosmic pan. Or perhaps, as a burst of magnificent fireworks; a spectacle of power and motion that leaves a sulfuric trail in the endless sky. Attraction, repulsion, light quickly swallowed by infinite darkness. Renée Bus uses anthropological archetypes to find a common wellspring for the human experience. She believes it can be found in our relation to our natural environment. The low, oscillating murmur that connects our steps to the ground and our mind to the earth.

Here, a selection of ceramic objects have found a moment to tell their tale. Resting atop petrified wood and green silk with a golden rim, these works seem to occupy a space in between the folds of time. They are manifestations of tools and utilities deeply ingrained in our collective memory. In their implied use and with their seductive surfaces they refer to some of the primal driving forces of our existence: power, consumption and possession. A ceramic knapsack is mounted on a piece of petrified boxwood that took at least 300 million years to arrive at its current state. In the drawers of the cabinet, one can find a dark clay tablet carrying a manifest in white handwritten letters. A declaration of limitations written by the artist as a way to conclude her education.

A double-faced scepter is mounted on petrified Indonesian palm wood that has become home to little tufts of Dutch moss. Next to it lies a ceramic crown with a shimmering black glaze. A king is nothing without his crown. But what is crown without a king? The golden heads wistfully peer into the future while carrying a secret in their shared cranium. Meanwhile, a soil-like plate and fleshy utensils are set for a feast for one.

A Fool’s display is the second ‘toonbanksolo’ hosted by Singular-Art. This series of exhibitions focuses on artists who generally work on a small scale and whose works function like an interconnected microcosm. At this moment you will need to make an appointment to visit the show. Please contact us via info@singular-art.nl or +31 (0)620801765 to schedule a visit. The toonbanksolo will run through the end of April. Things may change based on the constantly shifting Corona-guidelines.
