Workshop: Body, Space, Translation
Saturday, October 9, 2021
11:00 AM  4:00 PM

It is 2017, late August. I am dragging my legs, step by step. Wishing time would stop. But it doesn’t. I stop. I wait for a car to pass and cross the road. I stop. I take a breath. I touch my phone and nervously drag it out of my pocket. I check the time. It is time. I continue my walk. Bikes on the left. Bikes on the right. Bikes everywhere. Movement around me. I arrive at the door. It is everywhere around me. I stop. Exhale. I touch the handle. I pull. The door opens but not enough to let me in. It is heavy and its weight pushes it back in. I inhale and I exhale. I take a step back. I stop. I bend my legs slightly and prepare to repeat the same action. I pull, now knowing the strength and effort the opening requires. The door slowly opens. I step in and push the door behind me. I have entered. Dragging my legs, step by step, I wish time would stop. But it doesn’t. I continue.

Memories are both bodily and spatial. Our bodies remember the places where we have been. As Leslie Kern beautifully puts it in her recent book Feminist City: “My gender is more than my body, but my body is the site of my lived experience, where my identity, history, and the spaces I’ve lived in meet and interact and write themselves on my flesh.”

This workshop will start right here, with the material – the body. We will study the body by moving with it and feeling with it, looking at spaces around it and by asking, how did they shape me? Who is my body, where has this body been?

Venla Miila Kaarina (she/her) is a Finnish queer architect dancer. Her practice evolves around bodies and spaces that are always simultaneously universal yet unique. Through movement and by moving, her practice studies public and private spaces as well as the bodies occupying them.

Intervention: Body, Space, Translation
Sunday, October 10, 2021
1:00 PM  6:00 PM

The intervention day deepens the understanding on the themes presented during the workshop day. We will speculate, where will the body go? What does it want to be? We gather this information to create a performative ending for the weekend.

Workshop: Altered –i–
Saturday, October 16, 2021
11:00 AM  4:00 PM

Sarjon (He/She/They) is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores dialogue methods with altered identities, personas and body parts. The altered -i- workshop will introduce various vanity exercises that approaches the self-model as a research space for character scouting, finding altered eyes that build new prospectives on the performativity of our names, bodies, memories voices and self-representation.

Intervention: Altered -i-
Sunday, October 17, 2021
1:00 PM  6:00 PM

On the intervention day, we will work with classic the snd-inspired improvisation exercises that are based on film theories as social constructs. We will research both the somatic archive and the camera as a future spectator. Together with the group, we will decide the possible outcomes of the video works, performances and texual material.

Workshop: In the [Space] of Text
Saturday, October 23, 2021
11:00 AM  4:00 PM

When we talk about space, it is always a physical space that we imagine. However, the text that we read and write is also space, and we exist in this space as well. We share our feelings, history, stories and futures through text, may it be written, recorded or performed. But can we all exist in the space of text? Or should we make space so that we can? In this writing workshop, we will create space for ourselves in text while we unlearn and relearn the ways in which we read and write.

Bio: Sarafina Paulina Bonita (they/them) is a queer, Dutch-Surinamese, non-binary performance artist who works with audio and text. Sarafina creates performances and poetry from an intersectional approach that focuses on the experience of otherness. In their work, they question the construction of gender, the difference between the perceived and constructed feminine and masculine, and the affects of religion and heritage. They believe that through creating art, important stories are told, communities uplifted and, joy shared.
