Opening Sunday the 3rd of July between 16:00 - 19:00 - limited seating available
It is with great pleasure that we can announce the first solo exhibition of Ayo is coming to Singular-Art this summer. Singing Off-Key, a video installation with accompanying sculptures, will be on show from the 3rd of July until the 4th of September.
Ayo is an Uganda-born artist currently based in the Netherlands. Her work is concerned with feelings of displacement and connection within contemporary African diasporas. Untold, intangible histories and heritage are visualized in ways that reflect the often uncomfortable and usually amazingly rich knowledge that is produced by unrecognized, unofficial bodies.
Singing Off-Key is a video piece that captures her sense of cinematic style and exquisite awkwardness. Or in her own words:
“ This is a semi-autobiographical and anthological film in which I try to make tangible, the obscure feeling of displacement in the diaspora. At a certain point in a life, to feel alive, one struggles to reconcile the formative self with the present self. This internal state of constant negotiation, haunts. It’s like forgetting the voice of someone you once knew so well. This is why we Sing off key.”
Ayo received her MA (cum laude) in fine art from the Piet Zwar institute in 2020. Since then, her work has been exhibited throughout Europe. Recent presentations include recontres internationales,Paris, 25th Afrika Film festival, Leuven, BE, Ateliers Portes Ouvertes, Triangle-Asterides, Marseilles, FR, Possessed, European Media Art Festival, Osnabrück, GR. Upcoming presentations are planned at: Unfair, Amsterdam, Shimmer, Rotterdam and the muncipal art aquisitions presentation at Stedelijk museum Amsterdam.
