De Toekomst. Moeten we daar überhaupt over nadenken of zullen we de ogen sluiten en lekker achterover zakken in het nu? En als we dan toch voor die toekomst kiezen, hoe doen we dat dan in hemelsnaam? Hoe geef je handen en voeten aan zoiets ongrijpbaars als de toekomst? De verbeelding is een krachtig middel om in te zetten om houvast te krijgen op scenario’s en mogelijke oplossingen voor opdoemende problemen zoals de klimaatcrisis. Besiendershuis en LUX organiseren daarom de residentie Toekomstdenkers. We nodigen kunstenaars, makers en denkers uit om te reageren op deze Open Call en samen met ons de toekomst in te duiken. 

Toekomstdenkers is een initiatief van het Besiendershuis en arthouse LUX in Nijmegen, ontstaan uit een verlangen om een betekenisvolle residentie te organiseren met een maker/denker die over de toekomst wil nadenken, en echt iets kan verschuiven in de stad door middel van kunst en cultuur. Deze Toekomstdenker wordt tijdelijk thuis in de stad, en zet de verbeelding in om een nieuw toekomstscenario voor Nijmegen te schetsen, in welke vorm dan ook. Het thema van deze eerste editie van Toekomstdenkers is ‘de circulaire economie’. 

In een circulaire economie is afval een taboe en worden grondstoffen steeds opnieuw gebruikt. Het is evident dat we toe moeten naar een circulaire samenleving, maar hoe komen we tot een duurzame economie voor de toekomst? Er zijn door overheden al heel wat plannen geschreven om Nederland en Nijmegen circulair te maken, maar tot nu toe lijkt die toekomst ons steeds te ontvluchten. Plannen worden vooruitgeschoven en circulariteit blijft vooralsnog slechts op overzichtelijke schaal toepasbaar. Zo hergebruikt Dar ruim 80% van al het Nijmeegse afval weer als grondstof, maar worden op landelijk niveau nog steeds miljarden kilogrammen afval verbrand, gestort, geloosd of naar het buitenland verscheept. Hoe kan de stad Nijmegen voorop lopen in de circulaire fanfare en zo een voorbeeld worden voor anderen? Wat is er nodig om een circulair Nijmegen te realiseren? Wij geloven dat kunst als ultieme en vrijgevochten toekomstverbeelder hierin een centrale en aanjagende rol kan spelen!

Wie is de Toekomstdenker? 
· Een professioneel maker/denker wiens werk verbeeldings- en zeggingskracht heeft, in welke vorm dan ook; 
· Iemand die in diens werk vaker met (een aspect van) de toekomst bezig is, of in staat is om toekomstgericht te denken; 
· Iemand die kritisch en nieuwsgierig is, en in staat is om ideeën en denkbeelden om te zetten in tastbare vorm; 
· Iemand met een affiniteit met het thema ‘de circulaire leefomgeving’;
· Iemand die met een frisse blik naar Nijmegen en omgeving kan kijken. 

Wat is de uitkomst van de residentie? 
· Een artistieke uitkomst: een cultureel product of evenement; 
· Deze hoeft niet direct na de residentie plaats te vinden of af te zijn. De presentatie wordt in overleg gepland; 
· Deze is voor een groot publiek te ervaren en te begrijpen; 
· Deze draagt bij aan bewustwording over het thema, en verbeeldt een kans of mogelijke oplossing voor een probleem; 
· Deze kan worden gepresenteerd bij LUX, en/of elders als dat beter past bij de aard van het product of evenement. 

Wat bieden we? 
· Voorafgaand aan de residentie een kennismaking met de stad Nijmegen; 
· Een residentie van 2,5 maand (gedurende de maanden april t/m juni 2024) in één van de mooiste en oudste huizen van Nijmegen: het Besiendershuis;
· De mogelijkheid om een bijzondere kunstproductie te maken en die te presenteren in LUX; 
· Artistieke begeleiding door LUX en Besiendershuis en toegang tot ons netwerk;
· Een honorarium van tenminste 6.000 euro, een productie- en presentatiebudget van tenminste 8.000 euro.

Word jij onze Toekomstdenker? Reacties zijn welkom in de vorm van een motivatiebrief, maar ook in video of audio. Je hoeft geen uitgewerkt plan aan te leveren, maar geef wel aan wat je eerste ideeën of plannen zijn. Ook zijn we benieuwd naar je motivatie en affiniteit met het thema, en we ontvangen graag een overzicht van je relevante opgedane ervaring.

Open Call: Toekomstdenkers / Future Thinkers 

The future. Should we even think about that or should we close our eyes and relax in the now? And if we do choose that future, how on earth do we do that? How do you give substance to something as intangible as the future? Imagination is a powerful tool to use to get a grip on scenarios and possible solutions for looming problems such as the climate crisis. Besiendershuis and LUX therefore organize the Toekomstdenkers residency. We invite artists, makers and thinkers to respond to this Open Call and dive into the future with us.

Future Thinkers is an initiative of the Besiendershuis and arthouse LUX in Nijmegen, born from a desire to organize a meaningful residency with a maker/thinker who wants to think about the future and can really shift something in the city through art and culture. This Future Thinker will temporarily be at home in the city, and will use his imagination to sketch a new future scenario for Nijmegen, in whatever form that takes. The theme of this first edition of Future Thinkers is 'the circular economy'.

In a circular economy, waste is taboo and raw materials are reused again and again. It is obvious that we need to move towards a circular society, but how do we achieve a sustainable economy for the future? Many plans have been written by governments to make the Netherlands and Nijmegen circular, but so far that future always seems to elude us. Plans are pushed forward and circularity remains applicable only on a relatively small scale for the time being. For instance, Dar recycles over 80% of all Nijmegen's waste back as raw material, but on a national level billions of kilograms of waste are still incinerated, dumped, discharged or shipped abroad. How can the city of Nijmegen lead the circular fanfare and thus become an example for others? What does it take to realise a circular Nijmegen? We believe that art, as the ultimate and free-spirited imaginer of the future, can play a central and driving role in this!

Who is the Toekomstdenker? 
· A professional maker/thinker whose work is imaginative and expressive; 
· Someone who is more often concerned with (an aspect of) the future in their work, or is able to think in a future-oriented manner;
· Someone who is critical and curious, and is able to convert ideas and ideas into tangible form;
· Someone with an affinity with the theme of 'the circular living environment';
· Someone who can look at Nijmegen and the surrounding area with a fresh perspective.

What is the outcome of the residency?
· An artistic outcome: a cultural product or event;
· It does not have to take place or be completed immediately after the residency;
· It can be experienced and understood by a large audience;
· It contributes to awareness about the theme and represents an opportunity or possible solution to a problem;
· It can be presented at LUX, and/or elsewhere if that better suits the nature of the product or event.

What do we offer?
· Prior to the residency, an introduction to the city of Nijmegen;
· A 2.5 month residency (during the months of April to June 2024) in one of the most beautiful and oldest houses in Nijmegen: the Besiendershuis;
· The opportunity to create a special art production and present it in LUX;
· Artistic guidance by LUX and Besiendershuis and access to our network;
· An honorarium of at least 6,000 euros, a production and presentation budget of at least 8,000 euros.

How to react
Will you become our Toekomstdenker? Responses are welcome in the form of a motivation letter, but also in video or audio. You do not have to provide a detailed plan, but you should indicate your initial ideas or plans. We are also curious about your motivation and affinity with the theme, and we would like to receive an overview of your relevant experience.
